The technological evolution of artificial intelligence continues to take an increasingly central role in the world of Design and Business Design, testing the boundaries between human and artificial creativity.
But to what extent can an advanced language model contribute significantly to the creative process?
Michele Tagliavini, Giacomo Antonuccio, and Sofia Mizzan explored the use of ChatGPT as a virtual companion during the execution of a Design Thinking project, trying to understand whether it can represent only a support, be a valid substitute or, even, surpass in capacity the human input in the conception and realization of innovative projects that we as Upskill 4.0 follow daily.

Nowadays there is still a widespread conception of artificial intelligence as a mechanical substitute for human labor, to the point where people perceive this new technology as a threat to their jobs. But is this really the case?
The ability that generative AI possesses to reprocess and organize data is certainly far superior to that of humans-and there is ample scientific evidence for this (Harvard Business School, 2023). However, in terms of its creativity and ability to generate innovative ideas, there is less evidence available.
For this reason, Michele Tagliavini, Giacomo Antonuccio, and Sofia Mizzan decided to contribute their experience to experimentation in this field.
Design Thinking, a method that is used in Upskill 4.0 projects, with its user-centered approach, respect for the ecosystem in which it is placed, and creative problem solving, is by its very nature conducted by interdisciplinary teams, so as to stimulate collaboration and diversity of viewpoints, enhancing the individuality of each participant.
What better opportunity then to test the creative capacity of an artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT than by putting it to the test in a project already carried out by the Upskill 4.0 team?

To explore the ability of AI to generate innovative and superior ideas, they first conducted a study of the prompt, analyzing previously published research and articles and extrapolating those mechanisms and modes that were most effective for ChatGPT.
Once they had identified the appropriate ways to effectively and in an easily replicable manner interrogate AI and instructed them in the methodology of Design Thinking and, specifically, the Upskill 4.0 way of proceeding, they went through the stages of the project using AI.
All of the steps and ideas implemented by the model were then carefully compared with the solutions devised by the Upskill 4.0 team, with the aim of highlighting differences, similarities, and especially the degree of novelty and creativity.

What they found, they were very intrigued by. ChatGPT excels at providing detailed information and in-depth analysis on specific topics, demonstrating a remarkable understanding of concepts and excellent competence in presenting them in a structured way. However, as it ventures into the territory of creativity and original idea generation, it begins to falter.
Despite efforts in refining prompts, ChatGPT has manifested a tendency to repeat pre-existing concepts rather than introduce new perspectives or innovative ideas.
So while AI can be a valuable tool for in-depth detail and analysis, its ability to produce truly original ideas may be limited.
Listening directly to people to identify solutions that meet their specific needs remains critical. It was the people they talked to in Upskill 4.0 projects who nuanced the problem the team was trying to solve, inspiring the most critical insights and building confidence in the concepts. As hard as they tried, they could not find the same insights from a virtual companion.

Despite its ability to organize information and answer specific questions, ChatGPT according to Michele Tagliavini, Giacomo Antonuccio, Sofia Mizzan is not able to faithfully replace the human being at the crucial stage of creative generation. Human intuition, vision, and lateral thinking skills remain crucial to overcome creative obstacles and bring new ideas within Design Thinking processes.
In conclusion, while one can envision a future in which AI will be increasingly integrated into the Design and Business Design landscape, becoming an indispensable element due to its ability to process data and generate detailed insights, one cannot ignore the fact that generative AI, in our case ChatGPT, is confirmed to be a co-pilot rather than a captain of the creative process.
He still remains a noteworthy co-pilot!
