Upskill Piedmont: technology at the service of territorial development

RobotOil, a robot for coriliculture, or hazelnut cultivation, that sprays essential oils and kaolin made by ITS biotechnology Piemonte students for the company Angelo Arlandini, was the star of the final Upskill Piemonte presentation yesterday in Turin at UniCredit University. 

After institutional greetings by Cristina Giovando, President of Fondazione Sviluppo e Crescita CRT, Andrea Varese, Secretary General of Fondazione CRT, Stefano Micelli President of Upskill 4.0 and Cinzia Falcone Head of People and Culture Strategic Partner Northwest Region UniCredit, presentations of the prototypes designed for four entrepreneurial entities in the Piedmont region took the stage: Sarotto Group, Castello di Verduno, Consorzio Faber and Arlandini Angelo. 

This new edition of the project, again supported by Fondazione Sviluppo e Crescita CRT with UniCredit as a partner in the initiative, aimed to support the development of biotechnology and sustainable energy development in the Piedmont region.

The start of the final presentation was by ITS Energia Piemonte students who worked with Michele Tagliavini, project manager of Upskill 4.0, for Castello di Verduno, an entrepreneurial reality in the Langhe that combines several realities, a hotel, a restaurant, a cocktail bar and a historic winery. The goal was to develop a new reception concept for a land owned by Agriturismo Ca' del Re.

The type of tourist stay has changed a lot. According to Eurostat, 309.4 million are the No. of short-term rental nights in 2022. Tourists seek a unique experience, but stay less than four nights. Students have realized Elm boutique hotel, a new eco-sustainable village with a teaching garden, educational farm, housing units, relaxation areas and photovoltaic parking, as well as a new logo. RobotOil for Angelo Arlandini, on the other hand, responds to the need to combat diseases of the hazelnut plant through new technological solutions. This is only part of the solution, which also counts a new sensor system, partnerships with universities and a new visual identity. For Lucia Arlandini, and for Angelo Arlandini, the founder of this farm himself, the amazement at seeing how students from ITS Biotechnology Piedmont with Tiziana Obici managed to come up with such an innovative solution was great: "They did not know the world of agriculture, but they managed with a neutral look, to find a concrete solution."

For Sarotto Group, students from ITS Energia Piemonte carried out the project "Ricecycling World", a prefab prototype exportable to the world, an exhibition booth in Ricecycling Wall and a new online and offline image for Ricecycling Wall. Sustainable building in Italy is a widespread but uneven reality. Mauro Sarotto's feedback on the return of the prototypes was also very positive: "I am really excited and very satisfied with the project!"

For Faber Consortium the challenge was to encourage people at risk of institutionalization to stay at home through the use of lightweight home monitoring solutions, non-wearable devices, and timely notification of caregivers to enable interventions. Today in Italy, according to ISTAT, there are 12,630 active residential care facilities, 412,000 beds. Most are over 65, and 75 percent are dependent elderly. ITS students started from this and then carried out an in-depth study of weareble or non-weareble technologies such as non-thermal cameras. The solution they arrived at with Tiziana Obici, following them as project manager, is. DomoSecure, Intelligent Monitoring for Private Homes. a smart monitoring system with motion sensor and thermal camera that allows the elderly person to live peacefully at home and the caregiver to intervene promptly if needed.
