A smart helmet that helps the craftsman in welding bicycle frames by Dario Pegoretti

Officina Dario Pegoretti was founded in the 1980s thanks to Dario Pegoretti, a student of Luigino Milani, a master manufacturer of bicycle frames. In 1990 Dario Pegoretti decided to start experimenting with new shapes and techniques for creating frames, thanks to which he was able to make his name known all over the world.

Today à one of the most iconic companies in the handcrafted production of custom bicycle frames. It was one of the forerunners of TIG welding in the frame industry. Its frames, appreciated and recognized by an international clientele, are welded and painted by hand.

The workshop, in addition to having its own online shop, allows customers to purchase custom frames: you can choose the shape, size and material to receive your own unique and exclusive frame.

The design challenge conceived by the Upskill 4.0 team in collaboration with Pietro Pietricola and Cristina Wurdig of Officina Dario Pegoretti is to be able to automate some of the production processes for making bicycle frames by creating a combination of craftsmanship and new technologies.

The system must have the ability to support the welder in changing the current intensity during welding.

The critical issues of handmade, and custom-made, production are many: the difficulty in transmitting unique know-how at the basis of Italian excellence, in teaching the discipline to new staff, expertise in the hands of a few specialized figures, and limited production.

The design solutionITS MAKER students arrived with project manager Sofia Ressia is Traditionl Welding Pegoretti: aprototype welding mask, thermal and optical sensors for parameter detection and asmart view for the welder .

This project is part of the "Upskill" project by Fondazione Cariverona and Upskill 4.0, with UniCredit as a partner. The main objective of the initiative is to develop innovation projects by enhancing territories and businesses in the provinces of Verona, Vicenza and Mantua through the involvement of young students from ITS.

The company was selected to participate in the project; to address its needs, the Upskill 4.0 team engaged the ITS Maker Foundation of Bologna.
